Get to Know Your Principal Series – Jerry Maher
October 6, 2026
October is National Principals Month, and this year’s theme is #ThankAPrincipal. To celebrate, Walla Walla Public Schools is featuring our principals through a fun “Get to Know Your Principal” series.
It’s a simple way for students, staff, and families to learn a little more about the people who lead our schools each day. We hope you enjoy getting to know our principals!
Jerry Maher, SEATech and Career and Technical Education
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I was thinking about becoming a physical therapist before I started working with kids.
What was your favorite subject in school?
I enjoyed algebra. I also liked physical education. I remember begging my ninth-grade PE teacher to let me play flag football when I had a cast on my arm from a broken wrist. I had to get a doctor’s note, but it all worked out, and I was able to play.
What is one thing students might be surprised to learn about you?
I went skydiving with my mom, Mrs. “O,” when I was in college. It was her idea!
What is your favorite hobby or way to spend your free time?
I like spending time with my family, jogging, and enjoying the outdoors. I especially enjoy camping, biking, skiing, snowboarding, and other outdoor activities.
If you could have dinner with any famous person, living or historical, who would it be?
I don’t have one person in mind. Jerry Rice, Martin Luther King Jr., or Barry Sanders come to mind today.
What is your hidden talent?
I’m pretty good at home projects.
If you weren’t a principal, what career would you choose?
Construction, physical therapy, or something that allows me to achieve a goal, such as constructing something or helping people. I need purpose and relevance.
