On January 9, 2026, Walla Walla High School students Lucia Alvarado-Ruiz and Ryan Beebe competed in the SkillsUSA regional photography competition held at the EWU Catalyst Building in Spokane, Washington. The competition consisted of a theme-based photography project, a written exam on photography knowledge, a resume and interview section, and print judging. Each student provided two prints to be evaluated and judged by guest photographers.

For the theme-based project, students were tasked with shooting multiple images related to the theme, post-processing the images, and using PhotoShop to create a finished product. Each part of the project tested their photography knowledge in exposure, post-processing skills, and composition.

Points were assigned to each section of the competition. Students who received the most points advanced to the state competition later in the year.
