Walla Walla High School JROTC Builds Freshman Confidence at "Into the Blue" Camp

From September 9–11, 2026, Walla Walla High School’s JROTC cadets stepped up as leaders to support incoming freshmen during WaHi's annual "Into the Blue" freshman camp.

During the camp's team-building activities, the JROTC program led one of its most thrilling challenges: constructing and managing a two-rope suspension bridge—traditionally known as a "Postman's Bridge"—across the Tucannon River.

The Postman's Bridge is a primitive suspension structure consisting of a single foot rope to walk on and a parallel handrail rope at chest level for balance. While the setup is famously used in rigorous military training exercises, WaHi cadets adapted it to provide a safe, exhilarating, confidence-building experience for freshmen.

Under the careful supervision of the JROTC cadets, hundreds of freshmen faced their fears and safely traversed the rushing waters of the Tucannon River. The exercise forced students to rely on their balance, focus, and trust in the cadet safety teams.

"The ultimate goal of this exercise was to build confidence right at the start of their high school journey," the JROTC program noted. "Seeing the freshmen hesitate at the riverbank, take that first step, and make it to the other side with a smile is exactly what 'Into the Blue' is all about."

Through their hard work setting up the bridge and ensuring the safety of every participant, the WaHi JROTC cadets demonstrated exceptional leadership, engineering skills, and school spirit—setting a powerful example for the Class of 2030.
