SEATech Construction Technology Instructor Eric Matson Wins National Teaching Excellence Award!

Story by Mark Higgins

Walla Walla Public Schools is proud to announce that SEATech Construction Technology Instructor Eric Matson has been named one of 25 winners of the 2026 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Award for Teaching Excellence. Matson will receive $25,000, while SEATech’s Construction Technology program will receive $50,000 to support its skilled trades education program.

Matson was among 25 public high school skilled trades teachers from across the country who were surprised by the news that they had won this prestigious national award. In total, $2 million in cash prizes were awarded to this year’s winners.

“Teaching is not just what I do; it is who I am,” said Matson. “I show up every day committed to giving students the best experience possible, helping them build skills, confidence, and the path they were meant for.”

Matson’s selection represents a significant achievement in a highly competitive national program. His application advanced through three rounds of judging by experts in education, industry, philanthropy, and civic leadership. This year, Harbor Freight Tools for Schools received applications from 569 teachers representing 49 states.

"Eric Matson fosters an inclusive and engaging learning environment that prepares students for careers in the construction industry," said CTE and SEATech Skills Center Director Jerry Maher. "He is passionate about what he teaches, but he is even more passionate about developing young adults who can make positive contributions to their communities. Students enjoy his class, and he is always evolving his program to meet the needs of students while getting them ready for life after high school."

Matson’s Construction Technology program provides students with opportunities to gain real-world construction experience, develop technical expertise, and explore career pathways in the skilled trades. Through hands-on instruction and industry-focused learning, students build practical skills while gaining experience that can prepare them for college, apprenticeships, and careers.

His national recognition also shines a spotlight on the strength of Walla Walla Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education programs at SEATech and the district’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond high school.

The Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence is the flagship program of The Smidt Foundation, established by Harbor Freight Tools founder Eric Smidt. Now in its 10th year, the program has awarded more than $10 million to 183 skilled trades teachers and their programs across the nation.

The mission of Harbor Freight Tools for Schools is to increase understanding, support, and investment in skilled trades education in U.S. public schools. The organization believes every student in America deserves the opportunity to learn about the skilled trades from an excellent teacher.

Matson’s award will provide an opportunity to further strengthen SEATech’s Construction Technology program and expand hands-on learning opportunities for future students.
