WaHi Students Harvest First Crops from New Aeroponic System

Published in Week in Review - Dec. 5, 2025

The Walla Walla High School greenhouse was buzzing with activity the first week of December as students in Peggy Payne’s Plant Biology course harvested vegetables from the school’s new aeroponic growing system. The project was made possible through a state grant secured earlier this year by Nutrition Services Director Kara Carlson, which funded the purchase of the aeroponic equipment.

Students planted seeds in the water-based system this fall and are now gathering carrots, radishes, lettuce, peppers and other fresh produce. These student-grown vegetables will be incorporated into school meals through homemade dishes and salad bar offerings in district kitchens.

Payne says the hands-on experience is helping students deepen their understanding of root systems, plant nutrition, growing cycles, and yield production. Carlson adds that bringing fresh, locally grown products into school lunchrooms also supports her ongoing work to teach students where their food comes from and encourage them to try new, healthy foods.

Payne expressed her gratitude for Carlson and the Nutrition Services team, noting how meaningful this partnership has been for her students. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Payne and Carlson, Wa-Hi students are expanding their knowledge of plant science while contributing to healthier food options across the district.
