WaHi JROTC Rifle Team - Hermiston Competition & Drill Meet

Nearly 100 high school JROTC marksmen representing 16 rifle teams from 10 schools across Washington and Oregon met on Saturday, February 21, in Hermiston, Oregon, for the Cascade Mountain League JROTC Drill Meet Rifle Match.  The high school marksmen filled 5 relays to test their marksmanship skills in the 4th of 5 contests that the Cascade Mountain League conference will hold this season.  Shooters competed in 3-position rifle matches consisting of 20 record shots in the kneeling, prone, and standing positions.

In the sporter class, senior Cadet Command Sergeant Major Noah Kaheaku fired the Blue Devil’s highest score with a 534 out of 600, taking the gold medal in the Master Class after a virtual tie with teammate Cadet Lieutenant Wyatt Postlewait also at 534.  They broke the tie with Kaheaku’s center X ten count two points ahead of Postlewait.  The Blue Devil Sporter rifle team finished the day on a 2057, placing 2nd just behind the team from Lebanon, Oregon.  Team members included Kaheaku, Cadet Captain Melissa Villegas at 511, Cadet Sergeant Major Troy Beckmann with a 506, and Cadet Sergeant Noah Hein at 506 as well.

“Noah had a great match today,” Said Rifle Team Captain Evelyn Wolf. “He was one of our top sporter shooters at Army Nationals a week ago, and he shot even higher today.”

Other notable individual shooters were 3 Blue Devils who swept the Open Class: Cadet First Sergeant Alonna Fine with gold, Cadet PFC Toren Duske with silver, and Cadet Sergeant Alexis Latour with bronze.  Cadet PFC Magnus Edwards won gold in the Marksman Class, and Cadet Captain Shaylee Jones took silver in the Expert Class with a 504.

In the Precision Class, Walla Walla swept the top 3 spots with Cadet Major Claire Calvert shooting a 578 to take gold, followed by sophomore Cadet Staff Sergeant Peytin Munns with a 561 for silver.  Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Sofie Ewards took home bronze behind a 560.

“Calvert has been on a roll the last few weeks,” Said rifle team coach Mark Mebes. “She was the number 4-ranked Army JROTC precision marksman in the nation after Army Nationals and will be representing us at the All Service National match in Ohio next month.  She’s really having an extraordinary year.”

WaHi’s scores this season earned both its sporter and precision rifle teams invitations to the Cascade Mountain League JROTC Championship in Salem, Oregon, and to the CMP Western Regional Championship in Utah in April.

Congratulations to our students/cadets for their efforts during the drill competition.
